Twists are a go-to versatile and protective hairstyle that works beautifully on both short and long hair. They're not just a style on their own; they also serve as an excellent foundation for countless other looks. One of their biggest perks? They require minimal hair manipulation, giving your strands a much-needed break. While twists are perfect year-round, they offer fantastic protection against the sun, especially as those warmer days quickly approach. Ready to master the art of maintaining your twists? Dive into my expert tips!
Twists are an essential afro hairstyle, they give you an amazing look!
Like any afro hairstyle with extensions, they require the same specific care as your natural kinky or curly hair. It's a protective style that can turn into a destructive one if you forget to do your weekly treatments and moisturize your hair daily. Your lengths and ends must be pampered even though they are under your extensions, as these can make your hair very dry by absorbing all the moisture.
HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR TWISTS?
Even if your hair is protected under the twists for a certain period, you still need to make sure not to completely forget about it. Indeed, even if your hair is confined under the extensions, it must receive the same treatment as usual (or almost). Twists with extensions can only fully play their role as a protective style if you continue to take care of your hair. Here are some recommendations for maintaining your hair when you have twists with extensions.
SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONING
Even with twists, your scalp sweats, and your hair is exposed to pollution and dust. The shampooing step is therefore essential to remove this dirt from your head! I therefore advise you to wash your hair once a week to every 15 days maximum, depending on your habits. Start by rinsing your twists so that the dirt loosens. Then dilute the amount of shampoo you need in water. Then distribute your mixture on the scalp and let it sit for a few minutes. Gently slide your fingers over your scalp and along the twists to wash properly. Above all, do not rub your roots, at the risk of breaking your hair at the root. Once all that is done, you can rinse and proceed with conditioning. The same procedure applies to the latter, which should be left on for 5 to 15 minutes under a shower cap or a plastic bag.
MOISTURIZING
Moisturizing is essential when you wear twists with extensions. The frequency of moisturizing your hair should not be changed. Only the method of moisturizing should be slightly altered. Indeed, for practical reasons, it is more appropriate to moisturize your hair using a spray bottle rather than with a cream or hair milk. You can also make masks with the vegetable oil of your choice. Be careful not to overdo it for obvious reasons.
BEDTIME!
To protect your curls and prevent small strands of hair from coming out of your extensions, make sure to protect your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf. This is an excellent way to limit frizz caused by hair rubbing against your pillow during sleep. The scarf also helps to retain the moisture applied to your hair just before bedtime.
